Oculus / Meta Quest 2 USB connection stops working

Situation:

You connect your Quest 2 to your Windows PC by USB cable for use with, eg, MSFS via Oculus Link. For no apparent reason it stops working. The Quest will charge, but not connect to the PC.

Possible solution:

None of the "9 great fixes..." that virtually every site will tell you about.

Something odd has happened with the drivers - to fix it you have to edit the registry etc.

Here's the fix: (the 'EDIT 3 solution') https://www.reddit.com/r/OculusQuest/comments/nkypos/quest_2_not_detecting_pc_connection/

To anyone else who ever has this issue! the way I have fixed it is by first uninstalling the quest (device manager, right click the quests usb composite device then clicking uninstall) then going into the Windows Registry Editor as a system user and removing every Oculus Usb driver and entry (NOTE: these persist through a windows reinstall) these can be found under Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\usbflags\ and Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB (there may not be anything here if you uninstalled the quest). both of these will have registry keys with the vendor ID of 2833, meaning anything that starts with this number is an oculus entry. after removing all of them and restarting try connecting the quest and reinstalling oculus drivers {OCULUSINSTALLDIR}\Support\oculus-drivers\oculus-driver.exe and then you should be able to start oculus and use oculus link!

You may need an advanced registry editor to remove the keys in CurrentControlSet - use "Registrar Registry Manager" Home Edition.

Original post blogged on b2evolution.

How to do the Keswick Convention

Have your friends come back from "Keswick" and said how brilliant it is? Thought you'd have a go but haven't got a clue how it works? Been on the Keswick Convention website and still haven't got a clue? Wondering how in earth it all works? Here's some help...

Main thing to know

It's completely free, and you can go to anything you want to (within reason).

What happens at the Convention

There are three consecutive weeks, each week the conference runs from Saturday night to Friday night.

There are three "big things" each day:

1. The "Bible Reading" - a Bible talk from a well known preacher who takes the Bible as God's Word today

. They'll preach a series for 5 days, Monday to Friday, at around 11:15am - 12:30pm each day.

2. The "Evening Celebration" - another Bible talk from a well known preacher, but this time a different preacher each night and accompanied by singing, interviews etc. 7:30pm - 9:00pm.

3. A free afternoon so that you can enjoy the town & countryside.

Alongside these there are seminars each day before the Bible Reading (on Wednesday it's the Keswick Lecture), and some concerts and other things.

There's an excellent programme for children and young people. They have their own meetings at the same time as the adult stuff. Parents can watch the adult meetings at relay venues near the children's events. From 2020 they'll all be on the same site.

There's a programme book you can buy, and the website has the timetable too. For 2019 it's on this page: https://keswickministries.org/2019-convention/

So here's how to "do it"...

Choose a week

Your choice will be based on (a) your availability, (b) kids' holidays (perhaps), (c) who the main speaker is for the morning Bible readings.

Book some accommodation

Get in early, there are thousands of people wanting to be in & around Keswick, and not just for the convention. Lots of people go to the same place every year.

You can camp, or there's B&B, self catering and hotels.

Saturday to Saturday accommodation is best, but some places only do Friday starts.

If you stay outside Keswick there are Convention car parks for when you come into town. If you're fit you can walk from one end of town to the other in 20 minutes or so. One of the Convention car parks has park & ride.

Register children in advance

This helps the Convention to plan, and speeds up checking the children in. https://keswickministries.org/children-youth-families/register-children-youth/

Get excited & tell your friends

You're going to be hearing God's Word wonderfully proclaimed, getting built up in our Lord Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit through his Word, spending time with lots of other believers, and enjoying the beautiful Lake District. God willing you'll return refreshed in every way: spiritually, emotionally, physically.

Perhaps your friends will want to go too?!

Turn up and...

1. Get a programme. In 2019 you can get them from the Convention reception in Skiddaw Street

2. Go to the first Evening Celebration, 7:30pm in the main tent in Skiddaw Street. From 2020 it'll be on the Pencil factory site

3. Go to church somewhere in Keswick on Sunday morning - the Keswick speakers preach at the local churches.

4. Enjoy the rest of the week. Go to whatever you want. Remember the morning Bible Readings are in a sequence so it's worth going to all of them.

Can you contribute financially?

Of course - it's free to attend, but must cost the organisers tens if not hundreds of thousands of ££.

They announce how you can support the Convention at some of the meetings during the week - and you can do it on their website too - https://keswickministries.org/donate

I hope that helps

I'm enjoying my fourth Convention, and I love it.

P. S. where to run

I do a couple of nice "there and back" 5k runs:

1. Alongside Derwentwater going clockwise from the town or lakeside car park

2. Along the old railway track, accessed next to the swimming pool A bridge was collapsed there in 2018 but it was far enough for 5km I think.

I've yet to try the Whinlatter Forest 5k route - it's described as "challenging" on their website... I'll let you know!

Original post blogged on b2evolution.

I'll let you know!

cPanel email autorespond and discard email

You're going on holiday / vacation, or maybe a longer break like a Sabbatical, and you don't want a month's worth of emails waiting for you when you get back - so you want to turn off your email and send an auto-response to anyone who emails you.

The solution is not at all obvious.

If you use cpanel to suspect incoming emails, users get a nasty 550 message and no auto response.

If you use a filter to discard the email or redirect to a folder, the autoresponder won't work.

Here's what you need to do:

1. Set up an autoresponder for a made-up email on your domain. I just stuck a 1 on my email - so if my real email was dave@example.com I made an autoresponder for dave1@example.com. Make sure the "from" field has your main email in it (dave@example.com)

2. Set up a filter on your normal email account. This should have two actions:
(i) for all "has not been previously delivered" emails, redirect to the new autoresponder email (dave1@example.com),
(ii) discard the email

Now any email sent to dave@example.com gets redirected to dave1@example.com, triggering the autoresponse, and then gets deleted.

The only issue with this is that the email reply has the wrong email, dave1@example.com, but maybe they won't notice. I actually used a fake email of dave.on.sabbatical@example.com IRL

That'll do it. Why you can't just have the autoresponder on your email and then discard the email I don't know...

Original post blogged on b2evolution.

Control cPanel email autoresponder with a Google Calendar

You know how limited the cPanel email autoresponder is - you can only program in one response, the next one - and if you want to have different responses for different days you’ve got to program in each one every time…

Not any more! With my little script you can set up a Google Calendar to program the autoresponder for you. You simply create an event for whenever you want the autoresponder on. The event’s name and description tell the autoresponder what to say. You can use repeating events, day-long events, or short one hour events if you want to.

Magento / Inchoo Adwords Conversion tracking not working with 1.9

The Inchoo Adwords Conversion tracking module is really useful - and free. Here's the link: Inchoo.

However, if you use the new Responsive Theme (or 'RWD') for Magento from 1.9+, the Inchoo module stops working.

That's because it relies on a small layout file:

inchoo_google_adwords.xml

This file hides away in

app/design/frontend/default/default/layout

and is usually picked up by each theme on the checkout_success page to generate the appropriate call to Google.

However, the RWD theme doesn't call the files in that folder, it relies on its own layout folder.

So here's the solution:

Copy the inchoo_google_adwords.xml file into your theme's layout folder, eg:

app/design/frontend/my_responsive_theme/theme1/layout

And now it'll work.

Well, it did with mine.

Original post blogged on b2evolution.

I'm trying out a home cloud set up using a Raspberry Pi 2 Model B, and I've found the upload / download speed slower than expected.

Embed from Getty Images

I came across this article:

http://www.jeffgeerling.com/blogs/jeff-geerling/getting-gigabit-networking

describing how the author plugged in a USB3 Gigabit Ethernet adapter, and managed to up his throughput from 94 to 222 Mbps.

I thought I'd give it a go.

Two issues arose:

1. Would the adapter I bought from Amazon for £10 work with the Pi?

2. What exactly should I do to /etc/network/interfaces to get the adapter to work, if it would?

The original author just said "and adding a line for the new eth1 adapter..." - a number of people asked in the comments what that meant, but they were ignored.

So here are my answers:

1. I got a "USB Network Adapter, Rankie® SuperSpeed USB 3.0 to RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet Network Adapter" - and yes, it works. There are no LED lights on it, which I think I would have preferred, but it works.

2. Simples. I got this right by trial and error (ie, I tried something, and it worked)

First, plug in the adapter to the Pi.

Then edit the /etc/network/interfaces file:

sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces

Then copy the eth0 line, but for eth1, ie add:

iface eth1 inet manual

And save the file. (Ctrl-O, Ctrl-X)

And reboot your Pi.

sudo reboot

If you swap the ethernet cable onto your new adapter, you can now access the Pi via that.

NB It might have a new IP address, and certainly will have a new MAC address.

For various reasons I've got my router pre-assigning a particular address to the Pi, so I had to re-do that for the new MAC address.

I came across this article:

describing how the author plugged in a USB3 Gigabit Ethernet adapter, and managed to up his throughput from 94 to 222 Mbps.
